Underneath the Veneer

So, what with all the drywall coming down, a few trouble spots have been revealed  (see photos below):

1.  termite damage (thankfully not active),
2.  the central beam is bigger than we thought,
3.  more under joist plumbing lines (which explains all the original drop ceilings).

None of this is too worrisome, but will require some reconfiguring of original designs.

The termite damage to the exterior wall header beam (is that the right term?)and the low hanging P-trap.

The central beam, expected to be 5" x 11" is actually 5" x 18".  What could this mean for our splice?

  1. When we were redoing our bathroom in our old house, we found a HUGE active carpenter ant nest under our shower. I don't know how we kept from falling though. You never know what's behind the walls.
